Community Survey #2 - Initiatives Prioritization

Ulster County is committed to tackling the climate crisis by shifting to a clean energy economy and bolstering our resilience to the impacts of climate change that are already occurring. As part of this work, the Ulster County Department of the Environment has launched an initiative to develop a countywide Community Climate Action Plan, and its success depends upon input from you!

This is the second community survey in the planning process. The projects below were developed based on public feedback, studies by local college students, input from local governments, and additional research. The projects align with those presented at the public open house on Oct. 24. This is the virtual option for participation for members of the public that are unable to attend the open house.

The survey will close on Friday, November 1^st, 2024. We appreciate your input!

Support for Business GHG Emissions Reduction – Educate and support businesses in reducing GHG emissions. This could include help with funding opportunities, waste reduction, solar energy installation incentives, and/or a clean energy loan program.

Local Food Systems Sustainability Initiative – Work with stakeholders to promote local food systems, help farmers solve climate challenges, and support food-insecure residents to access healthy local food.

Technical Support for Municipalities – Provide assistance to local governments to help them reduce GHG emissions (e.g. assistance with grant applications, help installing solar energy, support with planting trees, and/or a clean energy loan program).

Construction & Demolition Waste Management – Manage waste from Construction and Demolition (C&D) projects, through deconstruction training programs, a waste policy, a reuse program, and/or incentives.

Support Countywide Diversion of Organic Waste – Take actions to reduce the amount of organic waste (e.g. food scraps, manure, sewage sludge, etc.) that is sent to the landfill.

Sustainable Ulster Workforce Innovation Center – Create a center for workforce development, career pathways, and business partnerships to support climate action goals.

Climate Resiliency Hubs – Create or use existing community centers to provide year-round educational programs and services and shelter during severe weather.

Climate Action Education and Outreach for Residents and Youth– Educate residents about climate change and ways they can be part of the solution. Include information about financial assistance, green jobs and renewable energy home improvements.

Public Transportation Service Improvements – Improve the service of Ulster County Area Transit (UCAT). This could stops, routes, frequency, hours, etc.

Bikability and Walkability Improvements – Increase opportunities for biking, walking, and related transportation. This could include more sidewalks, trails, bike lanes, a shared bike/scooter system, bike safety education, and related projects.

Public Transit Infrastructure Improvements – Implement infrastructure improvements such as electric trolleys/rail cars, ferries, additional park-and-rides, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and/or utilizing the Hudson River for shipping.

Renewable Energy Infrastructure Planning Study – Assess potential sites for renewable energy infrastructure, such as energy storage, transmission lines, substations, micro grids, etc. Then develop appropriate infrastructure.

Brownfield Clean-Up and Redevelopment – Redevelop brownfield sites in the County into green space, renewable energy generation, affordable housing, industrial use, mixed use, and/or commercial use.

EV Charging Station Planning Study – Identify geographic areas with a lack of electric vehicle charging stations. Then, increase access to charging stations in these areas.

Parks, Trails, and Conservation – Investigate potential areas for more parks, trails, and conservation areas. Then, implement them in the highest priority areas.
